Alzheimer's disease (AD), also called Alzheimer disease or simply Alzheimer's, is the most common type of dementia. Alzheimer's is a degenerative and terminal disease for which there is no known cure. In its most common form, it afflicts individuals over 65 years old.
Medicines used to treat symptoms of mental decline in people who have moderate Alzheimer's disease include Cholinesterase inhibitors such as donepezil (Aricept). Medicine may help some people function better by temporarily reducing memory loss and thinking problems. Donepezil (Aricept) is an example of that medicine. Donepezil (Aricept) may temporarily help improve memory, daily functioning and treat symptoms in some people who have Alzheimer's disease. When treating Alzheimer with donepezil (Aricept) the improvement varies from person to person. Donepezil (Aricept) do not prevent the disease from getting worse, although they may slow down mental decline. Treatment with Donepezil (Aricept) can be started as soon as Alzheimer's disease is diagnosed.
Parkinson’s
Parkinson's disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that often impairs the sufferer's motor skills and speech, as well as other functions. Parkinson’s disease is characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor, a slowing of physical movement or it complete loss.
Most people with Parkinson's disease had no specific cause to develop this illness. There are also minority of cases when the Parkinson's disease started because of genetic, toxins, head trauma, cerebral anoxia, and drug-induced Parkinson's disease.
At present, there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but medications such as Levodopa and carbidopa (Sinemet) can provide relief from the symptoms. The most widely used form of treatment is Levodopa and carbidopa (Sinemet). Levodopa is converted to a chemical called dopamine (DOE pa meen) in the brain. Symptoms of Parkinson's disease may be caused by low levels dopamine in the brain. Levodopa in converted into dopamine in the body. Carbidopa helps prevent the breakdown of levodopa before it can reach the brain and take effect. The combination of carbidopa and levodopa (Sinemet) is used to treat Parkinson’s symptoms.
Levodopa and carbidopa (Sinemet) does not slow the disease process, but it improves muscle movement and delays severe disability. The use of levodopa and carbidopa (Sinemet) allows people with Parkinson's disease to remain independent and able to function for longer periods of time. Levodopa and carbidopa (Sinemet) is the most effective medicine for relieving symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
